“In the 50 years that I have been publishing Quarter Horse Track magazine, I have never seen a single horse that was more impressive on a racetrack than Danjer, the world champion in 2021 and 2023,” says American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame member Ben Hudson. “The American Quarter Horse derives its name for a horse running a quarter of a mile–and no American Quarter Horse ever consistently ran 440 yards better than Danjer.”

Bred by Dean R. Frey of Edmond, Oklahoma, Danjer was by champion FDD Dynasty. The dark bay gelding was foaled February 5, 2016, on Bob Moore Farms at Norman, Oklahoma, out of the Take Off Jess mare Shez Jess Toxic.

Dean conditioned Danjer throughout his stellar career. Less than a week after the bay gelding scored in the All American Juvenile Invitational, he sold interests to Pat Guthrie’s Downtime Enterprises LLC and Billy Smith.

The sport’s all-time No. 1 winner of Grade 1 races, with 12 victories, Danjer won 22 of his 35 starts. He earned $2,499,431, placing him as the No. 3 all-time leading money earner. One of only 11 horses to win multiple world champion titles, AQHA Supreme Race Horse Danjer also was the champion aged horse and champion aged gelding in 2020, 2021 and 2023.

“Like many FDD Dynasty offspring, Danjer bloomed later and did not start really running until later,” says AQHA Director Emeritus Ed McNelis of Nampa, Idaho. “Once he reached the point he was winning, he just got better. Danjer won over $2 million without the large purses of futurities or derbies. He became an amazing horse and traveled the country, competing in and winning great races wherever he raced. Dean loved him like he does all his horses and gave him the best possible care. He passed unexpectedly while Dean had him out of his stall grazing, which he did often as [a] very caring owner.”

Danjer died of an aneurysm June 18, 2023, outside his barn at Ruidoso Downs. He was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2025.
