The photo finish camera at Lone Star Park couldn’t separate stablemates Relentless Eagle and Asscher, as the two sophomores finished in a dead heat for the win in Saturday’s $177,300 Dash For Cash Derby (G2) at Lone Star Park.
Relentless Eagle and Asscher were both trained by Marc Jungers, and they both covered their 440-yard trips in :21.372. Christian Ramos rode Relentless Eagle for owner Lance Bland, while Noe Garcia Jr. rode Asscher for owners Lance Bland and Jimmy Barton.
Relentless Eagle set the second-fastest qualifying time from his 1 3/4-length victory in one of five Dash For Cash Derby trials on September 13. The gelded son of champion Hes Relentless was bred in Oklahoma by George P. Mitchell II, and he was a $100,000 buy at the 2022 Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City.
Relentless Eagle is out of Volcoms Delight, a winning and stakes-placed Volcom mare purchased as a yearling by Mitchell for $45,000 at the 2012 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. All told, the gelding has won four of nine races and has banked $159,575, and he was a finalist in last year’s Grade 1 Texas Classic and Ruidoso futurities.
Asscher was bred in New Mexico by Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms, and she was a $350,000 purchase at the ‘22 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. The 10th-fastest Dash For Cash Derby qualifier, the filly is out of Astica, a homebred Jesse James Jr mare and the sport’s champion sophomore filly in 2015.
Campaigned in three states, including California and New Mexico, Asscher has won six of her 14 outs -- including the March 23, $404,000 Los Alamitos Oaks (G1) -- and she has earned $370,420, of which $320,970 has been pocketed from eight races this year.
Fastest qualifier and 2-1 favorite Woopaa finished eighth.
