Making the first start of his 4-year-old season, Daniel G. Miranda's Relentless Coronado won Saturday's 350-yard, $56,160 Eastex Stakes (G2) at Remington Park.
Relentless Coronado defeated Hes A Jet One by a half of a length in :17.419 under jockey Edwin Escobedo. Joe Davis prepped the gelded son of champion Hes Relentless.
Relentless Coronado was sent to post at odds of 6-1 in a field of five aged sprinters. Cardiac Cowboy, the 11-10 favorite, ran fourth after a sharp break, one length behind the winner.
"It was my first time on (Relentless Coronado), but I just wanted to keep everything calm for him," said Escobedo. "Even though we broke behind (Cardiac Cowboy), about halfway through the race was ours. Nobody was going to beat him.”
“I thought we would either win or run second,” said Davis. “That Cardiac Cowboy is tough to beat.
"We will probably run our horse once more here this meet," the trainer added.
Relentless Coronado was bred in Oklahoma by Reliance Ranches, and he was making his first start since December 22, when he ran eighth, three lengths behind winner Stanley Cartel, in the 400-yard, $157,000 Southern California Derby (G2) at Los Alamitos. Raced in three states, including New Mexico and California, the sorrel gelding has won six of his 19 outs, and the $34,800 winner's share of the purse from his first stakes score pushed his bankroll to $174,186.
