El Primero del Ano Derby Preview

David Hinkins' Price Fixer, a sorrel son of the Favorite Trick (TB) stallion Favorite Cartel and the fastest qualifier, heads a field of 10 sophomore colts and geldings entered back in Saturday's 400-yard, $195,200 El Primero del Ano Derby (G2) at Los Alamitos.

An $85,000 yearling purchase from the Ed Allred consignment at the 2021 Los Alamitos Equine Sale, Price Fixer is coming off of a 1 1/4-length victory in the second of two trials on March 5. Adan Farias trains the sorrel colt.

Price Fixer drew post 7 and will be ridden by Rodrigo Aceves.

Other prominent 3-year-olds entered back in the El Primero del Ano Derby include Party Politics, a son of world champion Apollitical Jess trained by Juan Aleman for owner JGA Racing Stables Inc. The sixth-fastest qualifier, Party Politics is coming off of a 2-year-old campaign during which he earned $860,705 from six races and won the June 19, 350-yard Ed Burke Million Futurity (G1), and the October 30, 400-yard Golden State Million Futurity (G1).

Party Politics ran second to Price Fixer after a less-than-perfect start in his trial. The gelding drew post 9 and will be ridden by Jesus Ayala.
