Mi Cielo Ranch's Daddy Caliente on Friday recorded the fastest qualifying time to the December 16, $100,000-added Evangeline Downs Futurity.

Daddy Caliente won the fourth of 11 trials by 2 1/2 lengths, as the Big Daddy Cartel colt covered 400 yards in :19.602. Claudio Aguilar rode Daddy Caliente for trainer Brian Stroud.

Daddy Caliente was bred in Texas by Jose R. Espinosa, and he was purchased by his owner for $17,000 at last year's TQHA Yearling Sale. The colt is out of Valiant Flame, a daughter of the First Down Dash stallion Valiant Hero. He traces back to his third dam, Speedy Empress, the runner-up in the 1996 All American (G1) and Texas Classic (G1) futurities and that season's co-champion 2-year-old filly.

Daddy Caliente was coming off of a second-place finish in the October 1, 400-yard Dash For Cash Futurity (G2) at Lone Star Park. Raced in two states, the colt has won two of six races and has banked $145,932.

Second-fastest qualifier Rgs Gold Wagon won his trial by 1 1/2 lengths in :19.657. Edgar Mata rode the graded stakes placed son of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon stallion Prized Wagon for owner Mauricio Garza and trainer Janessa Muniz.

Rgs Gold Wagon was bred in Oklahoma by Roy Garza. The sorrel gelding has won three of 10 starts and has earned $74,870, and he was a finalist in the Dash For Cash Futurity and Speedhorse Futurity (G3).
