For 125 years, the land at Fazenda Campanario in Laguna Carapa, Brazil, has been cultivated for agriculture. For the past 40 years, one of the ranch’s focuses has been raising quality American Quarter Horses for ranch work, and today it is rewarded with the American Quarter Horse Association International Best Remuda award.
Since 1992, the American Quarter Horse Association has honored the contributions ranch horses have made to the heritage of the American Quarter Horse by presenting each year the AQHA Best Remuda Award to a ranch that raises outstanding ranch horses. In 2018, AQHA began presenting the AQHA International Best Remuda Award to recognize an outstanding international ranch remuda comprised of registered American Quarter Horses.
Renato E.R. Barbosa’s Fazenda Campanario raises cattle and sheep, as well as herb tea, corn and soybeans.
Nearly 400 horses are used to care for the ranch, including a riding remuda of approximately 200 geldings that the ranch’s cowboys use almost daily.
Fazenda Campanario first began importing American Quarter Horses in the 1970s, and today its horses’ blood flows with classic cutting horse lines, including Hall of Fame horses Doc Bar, Freckles Playboy and Peppy San Badger, as well as High Brow Cat, Bob Acre Doc, Reminic, Dual Rey and Spots Hot.
The ranch breeds horses with a focus on pedigree, performance, good nature and good conformation. In addition to daily work on the ranch, the horses also compete in Brazilian Quarter Horse shows, having collected countless awards and championships in everything from cutting to halter to roping.
“Cowboys around the world take pride in riding a quality horse,” said AQHA Director of Ranching Kim Lindsey. “Those working at Fazenda Campanario are certainly aboard some of the best, and we’re proud to recognize that with the International Best Remuda award.”
To qualify for the AQHA International Best Remuda Award, the ranch must be located outside of the United States, and the AQHA member must breed registered American Quarter Horses for ranch work.
