Sharon Ohler of Versailles, Kentucky, is competing at her first Adequan® Select World Championship Show.

But she has a trusted partner for the journey. She has known him all his life.

“I owned his mother and foaled him out,” she says. “He’s possibly the other man in my life.”

And Hes Gold is a 2004 palomino gelding by Seven S Flashyzipper and out of Skipa Fancy Seeker by Skipa Star Time.

Sharon couldn’t get by without her chief groom, her husband, Jeff, who’s quick to brag about all of Sharon’s accomplishments with “Andy” through the Palomino Horse Breeders of America.

“He has been Golden Horse once and reserve Golden Horse once,” Jeff says, among other wins.

Now 15, Andy has survived injuries and even a bout with EPM and has kept on competing with his usual good humor.

“He’s powered by peppermints,” Sharon says.

At the Adequan® Select World, Andy and Sharon are competing in showmanship, horsemanship, hunt seat equitation, ranch riding and trail. Andy likes the last two best, Sharon says.

“I decided if I was going to come, I would take the deep plunge” and enter many events,” she says.

Sharon has worked in the past with AQHA Professional Horsewoman April Devitt, who advised Sharon to attend the Nutrena Ride the Pattern clinics. She was at the August 26 sessions on horsemanship and showmanship.

“I liked that the clinicians talked about cone and pattern placement,” she says. “That was helpful.”

Sharon scouted the event in 2018, working as groom for a friend.

“It is absolutely an amazing environment,” she says. “We all share the commonalities. We have a hard time getting up in the morning and can’t get going without coffee.”

Sharon worked as a music educator until her retirement, specializing in flute and voice.
Her dream for the 2019 Adequan® Select is to hear her name called as a finalist, but she would be happy with good goes in all her events.

Her partnership with Andy doesn’t depend on wins to thrive. It’s a lifetime affair.
