Chocolatito, a son of the Favorite Trick (TB) stallion Favorite Cartel racing for Dr. Ed Allred, on Sunday posted the fastest qualifying time to the August 18, $211,100 Golden State Derby (G2) at Los Alamitos.

Ridden by Vinnie Bednar for trainer Scott Willoughby, Chocolatito won the first of two trials by three-quarters of a length from second-fastest qualifier Terrific First Down. The California-bred gelding was extending his win streak to three and winning for the fourth time in six outs.

Chocolatito stayed calm before the race, even as rival KR Hi Five broke the through the gates prior to the start.

"He actually sat pretty chilly," said Bednar of Chocolatito. "I really thought he was going to pop on through there because he was so ready to go, (but) when (KR Hi Five) popped through there, he sat there real nicely and luckily he still broke nicely after that.

"It makes you a little nervous when you're on a good horse like him because you want everything to go right," he added. "He's an old pro. He knows what to do. I'm just happy to be riding him."

Chocolatito was bred by Dr. Steve Burns. The gelding has earned $29,410, and he was coming off of a victory in the May 18 Dillingham Handicap at Los Alamitos.
