Dunn Ranch's Take A Swig Of This broke sharply from post 7 and rolled to a half-length win in Saturday's Grade 2, $268,750 Heritage Place Derby for 3-year-olds at Remington Park.
Trained by Monty Arrossa, Take A Swig Of This covered 400 yards in :19.318 while earning a 104 speed index. Francisco Calderon rode the gelded son of champion A Revenant, who banked $112,875 from his second stakes victory.
Take A Swig Of This was the seventh-fastest qualifier from 10 Heritage Place Derby trials run on May 13. The brown gelding was bred by Weetona Stanley of Madill, Oklahoma, and he was purchased by Dunn Ranch for $40,000 at the 2021 Heritage Place Yearling Sale.
“He didn’t get the best of breaks in the trials,” said Calderon, referring to Take A Swig Of This' third-place finish in his trial. “Breaking from the gate was my concern tonight. I just have to credit Monty for getting him ready for tonight.”
“I stood him in the gate a couple of more times than normal to get ready for this, and he was fine,” said Arrossa.
Take A Swig Of This is out of PYC Prize Doll, an unraced homebred daughter of PYC Paint Your Wagon. He traces back to his third dam, Fast First Prize, a homebred Heza Fast Man mare who won the '02 Heritage Place Futurity (G1).
Raced in two states, including California, Take A Swig Of This has won four of eight starts and has earned $394,583. The gelding's race record includes a dominating two-length victory in the February 18, $183,000 Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1).
Hooked N Gone, the fastest qualifier, finished second.
