Argentina’s Estancias Graciarena is the 2019 AQHA International Best Remuda Award winner.

Since 1992, the American Quarter Horse Association has honored the contributions ranch horses have made to the heritage of the American Quarter Horse by presenting each year the AQHA Best Remuda Award to a ranch that raises outstanding ranch horses. In 2018, AQHA began presenting the AQHA International Best Remuda Award to recognize an outstanding international ranch remuda comprised of registered American Quarter Horses.

Andres de Lazzer’s Estancias Graciarena of Olavarria, Argentina, has for 30 years cultivated American Quarter Horses, with a special focus on the bloodlines produced by King Ranch. De Lazzer operates Estancias Graciarena with his wife, Mariquel, and daughters, Sofi and Connie.

The intent of the ranch has always been to produce good horses for working with cattle, and American Quarter Horses were the only choice to fully fill that need. Estancias Graciarena’s breeding philosophy is simple: beauty, form and function. That is, producing a good-looking, true all-around horse able to work on the ranch, but also able to perform in different disciplines, all without neglecting structural correctness.

With the stallion Pecom Le Guayano, who is by a son of Colonel Freckles, the ranch moved into show competition, and has continued this very successfully, with many other horses such as Chickasaw Lady Doc and Top Okie Cody. The ranch’s horses have earned nearly 100 AQHA points in limited competition. The ranch, which stamps its horses with a “CKW” prefix to the name, has won many individual equine awards in South America in halter and performance events, and year-end awards, as well as breeder awards.

The ranch’s bloodlines feature many great horses, including Blondy’s Dude, Freckles Playboy, Gallo Del Cielo, Genuine Doc, Hollywood Dun It, Leo, Peppy San Badger, Shining Spark, Topsail Cody and others.

“The careful attention the de Lazzer family has paid to their breeding program is evident as you look at multiple generations of produce out of their high-quality American Quarter Horse mares,” said AQHA Chief International Officer Anna Morrison. “Breeding American Quarter Horses is a necessity for the success of their ranching operation, but it is clearly a passion, as well.”

To qualify for the AQHA International Best Remuda Award, the ranch must be located outside of the United States, and the AQHA member must breed registered American Quarter Horses for ranch work.

Estancias Graciarena will receive a specially designed award presented at the Working Ranch Cowboys Association World Championship Ranch Rodeo, November 7-11 in Amarillo. The AQHA International Best Remuda will also be recognized at the 2020 AQHA Convention in Las Vegas. Look for a feature on the ranch in an upcoming issue of The American Quarter Horse Journal.
