Los Alamitos
Martha F. Wells' Yanque was a prompt 2-5 favorite in Sunday's 550-yard Barbra B Handicap.

Under jockey Ruben Lozano, Yanque went 550 yards in a hand-timed :26.700 while defeating Ballast Point by a half of a length. Matt Fales saddled the homebred 5-year-old Favorite Cartel gelding.

"He did not break as sharply as in his previous races," said Lozano. "(Ballast Point) gave us a great fight. At the end, Yanque closed nicely. He's a lot of horse.

"I kept looking at Ballast Point, but I felt we had it late," the rider added. "He was beating us early on, but we got him at the end."

Yanque was bred in California. The gelding has won his last three starts, all against stakes company going 550 yards. Raced at Los Alamitos and Turf Paradise, Yanque has won eight of 31 outs and has banked $157,461.

"We knew we had our work cut out for us with Ballast Point," Fales said. "Yanque relished the challenge tonigh,t and I just couldn’t be prouder of him.

"The reason we decided to go 550 with him is because he can afford a small error and he can still make up the ground," the trainer added. "At 400 yards, he just can't."

Run Raging Rhino Run finished third and was followed by CM Once Ina Bluemoon and A Mere Icon.

Louisiana Downs
Canselman handled a muddy and sealed track with skill, as the gray 4-year-old Favorite Cartel gelding earned a 1 1/2-length win in Saturday's 870-yard, $15,000 Marathon Stakes.

Prepped by Alfredo Gomez for owner Q and S Racing, Canselman stopped the timer in :45.742 while posting his fifth win in nine starts and first stakes victory. Cristian Esqueda rode the gelding.

Canselman was bred in California by Steve Burns. The $9,000 winner's share of the Marathon Stakes purse increased his earnings to $34,015.

Desire Astoli, Freakin Patriot Dash, Im Mighty Fast, and Ms Dashing Queen completed the order of finish.
