Grade 1 winner Bomb Cyclone and Grade 3 winner Lethal Avenger will make their 4-year-old season debuts in Monday's 350-yard, $45,000 John Andreini Memorial Stakes at Ruidoso Downs.
A son of Favorite Cartel owned by Rosenthal Ranch LLC, Bomb Cyclone will be making his first start since December 10, when the California-bred gelding ran fourth, 2 1/2 lengths behind winner and eventual world champion Empressum, in the 440-yard, $750,000 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos Racecourse. Bomb Cyclone is coming off of a sophomore campaign during which he earned $525,404 from five races and scored a clear 1 1/2-length victory in the November 6, $982,000 Los Alamitos Super Derby.
Bomb Cyclone drew post 5 and will be ridden by Eduardo Nicasio for trainer Chris O'Dell.
Lethal Avenger qualified to all three Grade 1 derbies at Ruidoso Downs last season and ran third in both the All American and Rainbow derbies. Trained by Fred Danley for owners J & SM Inc., Don Reynolds, and Lane Reynolds, the Volcom gelding is coming off of a 3-year-old season during which he banked $264,206 from eight starts and won the Grade 3, 400-yard West Texas Derby at Sunland Park.
