Wooten Racing's Shaw Island Senator, a daughter of the Jess Louisiana Blue stallion Louisiana Senator trained by Mike Joiner, is the fastest qualifier to the June 2, $58,438 John Deere Ruidoso Juvenile Challenge.

Competing in the last of three 350-yard trials at Ruidoso Downs on Friday, Shaw Island Senator defeated second-fastest qualifier Will B Valiant by a neck in :18.283. Felipe Garcia-Luna rode the homebred filly, who was scoring her first win in two outs.

Shaw Island Senator was bred in Oklahoma. The filly is out of Sea Island Dancer, an 11-year-old daughter of champion Mr Jess Perry.

"She ran a nice race," said Joiner. "She showed she's a nice filly. She won her Remington Park training race."

Will B Valiant is a homebred son of the Valiant Hero stallion Mighty B Valiant owned by retired jockey G.R. Carter Jr. and his wife, Shaena. Ricky Ramirez rode the Oklahoma-bred gelding for trainer Clint Crawford.
