Leadership in Action: Your Gift at Work

How Donors Like You Shape the Future of the Quarter Horse Industry

Sidney Dunkel’s story is a testament to what can happen when talent meets opportunity – and when a young leader embraces the values of competence, character, and commitment. A former AQHF scholarship recipient, Sidney has grown from a dedicated AQHYA competitor into a respected educator and role model in the American Quarter Horse industry.

With a family deeply rooted in AQHA – her grandfather, Jim Jennings, worked four decades with the Quarter Horse Journal – Sidney was raised in the saddle. Her AQHYA journey began at 13, showing a horse, she trained herself. That first taste of competition turned into a string of achievements, including multiple AQHA World and Reserve Championships in Versatility Ranch Horse and Ranching Heritage Challenge classes. Even before youth divisions existed, Sidney competed alongside seasoned professionals, demonstrating not only competence, but resilience and drive.

But Sidney’s impact goes beyond titles. It’s seen in her character–in the integrity, humility, and leadership she brings to everything she does. From her days in Texas 4-H to her current role as an Instructor of animal science at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas, she has been shaping young minds and strengthening the future of the Quarter Horse community.

And none of this would have been possible without you.

Sidney credits the AQHF scholarship for helping her pursue higher education without sacrificing her passion for Quarter Horses. It allowed her to keep competing, learning, and connecting. She hopes to serve on AQHA committees and continue leading the way for the next generation.

Her advice to AQHYA youth? “Get involved and take full advantage of every opportunity. You’ll gain lifelong friends, mentors, and the confidence to lead.”

Thank you for investing in young leaders and making the future brighter, one scholarship at a time.
