There will be no live racing at Los Alamitos Race Course on the weekend of Saturday, February 11, and Sunday, February 12. During that off week, the track maintenance staff at Los Alamitos Race Course will conduct its regularly scheduled annual track renovation.
Live racing at Los Alamitos will resume with two outstanding night racing programs on the weekend of February 18 and 19. The Saturday, February 18, program will feature the Los Alamitos Winter Derby, which is the nation’s first Grade 1 Quarter Horse derby of the year. The Sunday, February 19, program will be highlighted by Grade 1 Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship featuring round three of the rivalry between 2022 AQHA World Champion Empressum and two-time Champion of Champions winner Apollitical Pence.

Empressum and Apollitical Pence, the top two aged geldings at Los Alamitos, have split their two previous meetings. Empressum spoiled Apollitical Pence’s attempt at a third straight Champion of Champions win on December 10, while Apollitical Pence handed Empressum his only loss here when defeating in the Robert Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship on October 8. Scoops Dynasty, winner of last year’s Winter Derby, and graded stakes winner London Toby are also scheduled to compete in the Brad McKinzie.

On February 11 and 12, Los Alamitos will be open as usual for daytime simulcasting featuring top tracks like Santa Anita, Golden Gate, Belmont at Aqueduct, Gulfstream, Oaklawn and more. Los Alamitos will also be open for night simulcasting on both Friday and Saturday (February 10-11) offering Cal Expo and other top harness tracks, racing from Australia, and more. As in previous years, Los Alamitos will be closed during the evening of Super Bowl Sunday on February 12 since there is no night live racing in California or simulcast imports offered.

Los Alamitos staff will begin the track renovation after the morning workouts are completed on Saturday, February 11. The track is scheduled to reopen for training on Thursday morning, February 16. For more information, please call 714-820-2690.
