Dr. Steve Burns' You Can Run is the fastest qualifier to the February 8, $190,550 Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1).

Racing in the last of four trials on Saturday, You Can Run covered 400 yards in :19.768 while defeating fourth-fastest qualifier John Carter Cash by three-quarters of a length. Jesus Ayala rode the homebred Favorite Cartel gelding for trainer Mike Casselman.

You Can Run was winning for the third time in six starts and increasing his earnings to $18,140, but he didn't get the best of trips.

“He’s a little green I think,” Casselman said. “Ayala said he went in because there was no one there. He broke better than he has before. He said that he was wanting to get in the whole way until he saw another horse. Then he kind of lined up."

You Can Run's resume includes a second-place finish in the December 15, $30,000 Los Alamitos Juvenile Invitational Stakes.

Ron Hartley’s Cartel Jess Rockin, the sport's champion 2-year-old filly last year, made her sophomore season debut with a three-quarter length victory in the second heat. Ridden by Juan Pablo Leon for trainer John Cooper, the Favorite Cartel filly covered 400 yards in :19.826 while scoring her fourth win in 10 races and pushing her bankroll to $843,940.

Cartel Jess Rockin was making her first start since December 15, when she won the Grade 1, 400-yard Los Alamitos Two-Million Futurity at odds of 20-1.

“She’s figured things out,” Cooper said of Cartel Jess Rockin. “The key is to keep her sound. It was a thrill to see her be named a champion. I was thrilled for Ron Hartley. He’s fighting an illness right now so I’m hoping this win does a lot of good for him.”
