May 15-19 Stakes Recap

Following is a recap of all official American Quarter Horse stakes and trials for the week of May 15-19. For recaps of most graded stakes, Bank of America Racing Challenge stakes and trials, and most stakes with purses of $100,000 or more, see the individual recaps in the Racing News section. This page will be updated throughout the week.

Ajax Downs
Had To Be Ivory made his 9-year-old season debut with a one-length victory in Wednesday's $22,646(US) Norman Picov Maturity.

Prepped by Bryn Robertson for owners Carol Robertson and Jaime Robertson and aided by a reported 6-mph tail wind, Had To Be Ivory went 300 yards in :15.266. Josh Scott rode the homebred son of Ivory James.

"As soon as I got on him today, he told me, 'It's game time, son,'" said Scott. "He just took me from there. I never even had to ask him."

Had To Be Ivory recorded a 103 speed index. A three-time Canadian champion racing Quarter Horse, the bay gelding was bred in Ontario, and he was making his first start since October 28, when he ran fifth, two lengths behind winner Mr Michel, in the 400-yard, $111,920 Indiana Championship Stakes at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

Had To Be Ivory was winning for the 26th time in 34 races, and the $9,339 winner's share of the purse from his 18th career stakes score increased his earnings to $336,649.

Century Mile
The photo finish camera at this track couldn't separate Jerry Stojan's Flight Club and Cindy Fehr's Jessaprimadonna at the wire, as the two rivals finished in a dead heat for the win in Friday's $15,420(US) Old Timers Classic Stakes.

Flight Club and Jessaprimadonna stopped the timer in :15.481 on a track officially labeled "slow" while aided by a reported 30-mph tail wind. J.B. Botello rode Flight Club for trainer William Leech, while Daniel Tavares rode Jessaprimadonna for trainer Misael Moreno.

Flight Club was bred in California by Dr. Steve Burns, and the multiple stakes winning  6-year-old son of champion Foose was purchased by Stojan as a yearling by Charles Stojan for $19,000 at the 2019 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. Campaigned primarily in Canada, the gelding has won 14 of 20 starts and has banked $155,946.

Jessaprimadonna is a 6-year-old daughter of the Mr Jess Perry stallion One Sweet Jess. The multiple stakes winning mare was bred in Louisiana by Leroy Janacek Jr. Raced in Canada and Louisiana, Jessaprimadonna has won nine of 28 outs and has earned $95,701.

Horseshoe Indianapolis
Nachor Secret, a homebred son of Habits Secret owned and trained by Ricardo Martinez, is the fastest qualifier to the June 1, $99,200 Harley Greene Derby (R) for state-bred 3-year-olds.

Ridden by Martin Munoz, Nachor Secret made his season debut with a 1 1/4-length victory in the first of three trials. The colt went 350 yards in :17.713 while earning his third win in seven starts.

Nachor Secret was making his first official start since November 10, when he ran second in a 300-yard, $22,000 open-condition allowance dash for 2-year-olds at this track. The colt has earned $38,242, and he was a finalist in last year's Miss Roxie Little Futurity (R).

"He was a menace last year, and he we had to (geld) him," said Martinez of Nachor Secret. "I can see a big difference in him this year. He is focusing a little better already. He had the winter off, and that helped him too."

Miles City
One Fabulous Dynasty was a prompt even-money choice in Saturday's $46,000 Dan Lockie Derby.

Ridden by Kody Kellenberger, One Fabulous Dynasty covered 300 yards in :15.289, and his winning margin was a clear 1 1/4 lengths from Boxs Princess. Robert Johnson saddled the One Fabulous Eagle colt for owners Deanna Anderson and Casey J. Foster.

One Fabulous Dynasty was coming off of a victory in one of five trials run on May 5. The colt was bred in South Dakota by Bob Johnson and Gary Johnson. Raced in three states, including Iowa and Wyoming, One Fabulous Dynasty has won five of eight starts -- including last year's Bucking Horse Sale Futurity at this track -- and he has banked $52,430.

One Fabulous Dynasty was the second-fastest qualifier. Fastest qualifier Nito Skeeto ran fifth in the six-horse field.

An 18-1 longshot in a field of eight 2-year-olds, Jrs Queen sprinted to a three-quarter length victory in Sunday's $58,000 Bucking Horse Sale Futurity.

Jrs Queen went 250 yards in :13.522 under jockey Jayden Ironeyes. Robert Johnson prepped the chestnut daughter of Flying Cowboy 123 for owner Broken Heart Ranch.

Jrs Queen was bred in Wyoming by Ron Moosman and Jim Nebeker, and she was the fifth-fastest qualifier from seven trials run at this track on May 4. The filly is out of Mississippi Queen, a 7-year-old Corona Cartel mare. Her second dam, the Jess Louisiana Blue mare Louisana Corona, won the 2014 Junos Request Stakes (G2) at Remington Park in her career finale, and she was a finalist in Feature Hero's '13 All American Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.

Jrs Queen was winning for the first time in two races and increasing her earnings to $29,625.

Pocatello Downs
Two official stakes restricted to Idaho-breds were contested at this track on Saturday.

Luv Ya parlayed a sharp break from post 2 into a wire-to-wire victory in Saturday's $54,220 Idaho Cup Futurity (R) for state-bred 2-year-olds.

Trained by Sergio Canales for owners Cody Allred and Keller Livestock, Luv Ya covered 350 yards in :18.010 while defeating fastest qualifier Hesa Handsome Prinze by three-quarters of a length. Jesus Canales rode the bay daughter of the Corona Cartel stallion Docs Best Card.

Luv Ya was the third-fastest qualifier from five trials run at this track on May 5. The filly was bred by Allreds Horse Haven, and she is out of Shi De Anna, a homebred Proudest Effort mare who won the 2000 Diamond Classic Derby at Yellowstone Downs.

Luv Ya was winning for the second time in as many outs and increasing her earnings to $22,888.

Also on Saturday, Brayan Juarez rode seventh-fastest qualifier Walking Thru to the filly's first stakes win in the 400-yard, $28,370 Idaho Cup Derby (R).

Prepped by Ramiro Fregoso for owner Miguel Camacho, Walking Thru defeated JS Night Moves by a short nose in :20.169. The sorrel daughter of the xxx stallion Bodacious Dash earned $11,348 from her second win in eight races.

Walking Thru was bred by Edward J. and Von Zae McNelis. She is out of Awesome Gift, a homebred winning daughter of the Walk Thru Fire stallion Fire And Corona.

Campaigned exclusively in Idaho, Walking Thru has banked $25,079. The filly was a finalist in last year's Bitterroot Futurity (RG3) at this track.

Fastest qualifier ME Ettago Relent finished third, a neck behind the winner.

Weber Downs
Fastest qualifier OJD Jess A Bug broke sharply from his rail post and sped to a clear 2 1/2-length victory in Saturday's $77,654 Hadley/Giles Futurity.

Trained by Pedro Rivas for owners Karla Diaz Gomez and Oscar Jaime Diaz, OJD Jess A Bug went 330 yards in :16.439 while earning a 107 speed index and breaking the previous track record of :16.485 set by Fire Of The Mountain on April 21. Cristian Aguirre-Erivas rode the bay One Sweet Jess gelding.

OJD Jess A Bug was bred in Idaho by his owners, and he made his official career debut with a 2 1/2-length win in the third of seven trials on May 4. The gelding is out of Bugs Wagon, a winning Louisiana-bred PYC Paint Your Wagon mare purchased by Oscar Diaz from breeder Bobby D. Cox for $36,000 at the 2014 Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City.

The $32,615 winner's share of the purse from his first stakes win increased OJD Jess A Bug's bankroll to $34,115.

Also on Sunday, fastest qualifier Jazzing Dynasty won the 350-yard, $23,837 Weber Downs Fillies Derby for sophomore fillies.

Ridden by Gerardo Vera for owner and trainer Wes Kellett and aided by a reported 7-mph tail wind, Jazzing Dynasty stopped the timer in :17.341, besting the previous track record of :17.446 she set in her May 5 trial. The brown daughter of JR Dynasty Mountain recorded a 110 speed index from her first career stakes score.

Jazzing Dynasty was bred in Utah by Ross L. Herrick. Raced in four states, the filly has won three of nine starts, and the $10,012 winner's share of the Weber Downs Fillies Derby purse pushed her earnings to $34,911, of which $28,985 has been pocketed from four races this season.
