Wahene Version tops the New Mexico State Fair Derby trials.

The Downs at Albuquerque hosted a slew of trials on Friday, September 6, including setting the field for the September 22, $200,000-est. New Mexico State Fair Quarter Horse Derby (RG3) for state-bred 3-year-olds.

Erick Carrillo’s Wahene Version was the fastest qualifier, as the chestnut daughter of Winners Version sped to a wire-to-wire, two-length victory in the last of three trials. Ridden by Edgar Martinez for trainer Arnoldo Carrillo, the filly covered 400 yards in :19.378 while scoring her fifth win in 13 races and third win in six outs this year.

Wahene Version was bred by Dirk Jones, and she was a $6,000 yearling purchase at the 2017 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs. She has earned $116,262, of which $85,440 has been banked this season, and her resume includes a victory in the April 6, 350-yard Sunburst Stakes (RG3) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-old fillies at Sunland Park.
