David R. Rogers' Flying Joy 1, a sorrel daughter of Flying Cowboy 123 and the fifth-fastest overall qualifier, sprinted to a half-length victory in Saturday's Grade 2, $419,735 Oklahoma Futurity at Remington Park.
Racing against a reported 13-mph head wind, Flying Joy 1 went 300 yards in :15.661 under jockey Ricky Ramirez. Trey Wood saddled the filly, who earned $167,894 from her second win in two outs and first stakes score.
Flying Joy 1 was bred in Oklahoma by Cuadra JM LLC, and she was purchased by Rogers for $49,000 at last year's Heritage Place Yearling Sale. The filly was actually the fastest qualifier from the second night of Oklahoma Futurity trials, March 8.
Flying Joy 1 is out of Kylee Joy, a winning daughter of champion First Moonflash, a finalist in the 2020 Ruidoso Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs, and a half sister to Grade 1 winner Sir Seth.
"At the ranch, she just seemed like another horse to me," said Ramirez of Flying Joy 1. “But once we got her to Remington Park, she matured and figured out what her job was.”
Flying Joy 1 increased her earnings to $173,786.
Ocho Rojo, the fastest qualifier from the two nights of Oklahoma Futurity trials, broke slowly and finished last in the 10-horse field.
