Zane Chunn won big in his first year as an open competitor, taking home the world champion and the reserve world champion titles in his first year as an open competitor at the 2017 AQHA Cowboy Mounted Shooting World Championships in March in Houston.

But this isn’t his first title.

Zane is a four-time youth world champion and a three-time youth reserve world champion in cowboy mounted shooting. Three of his youth world champion titles were won aboard Little Costa Latte.

Little Costa Latte is a 2007 dun mare by El Costa Prom and out of Blackeyed Beatrice by Little Peppy Seiko. She was bred by Annie Bianco Ellett. “Latte” is the horse Zane rode this year to clinch the reserve world champion title at the 2017 AQHA CMS World Show, and the horse he won the open world title on is Costa Smart Hickory, a full-brother to Latte.

“It was really a fun win to be able to get first and second on those two,” Zane says.

Costas Smart Hickory is a 2008 bay gelding also bred by Annie. Zane looked to AQHA Professional Horseman Mozaun McKibben to train “Mocha.” However, Mocha got an eye infection in 2014, ultimately becoming blind in his left eye. Mocha’s future as a cowboy mounted shooting horse became uncertain, but Zane decided to continue to ride and show Mocha to see how he would progress.

“Obviously he has really exceeded my expectations with only having one eye,” Zane says. “The basis our relationship is built upon is him trusting me. He has really just been a fantastic horse.”

Zane says everything kind of fell into place for him and Mocha this year, and he felt like it was Mocha’s year to really shine at the CMS World.

While Zane was lucky enough to get the top two titles, he also placed fourth in the open as the catch rider of DM Docs Magic. Zane was riding in place of friend Matt Sronce, who was injured the weekend before the show.

“It was really exciting to have all three of the horses I rode to place in the top four,” Zane says. “It really went all as planned. It certainly is one of the events that I cherish the most and I really look forward to it every year.”
