Trainer Chris O’Dell has the top qualifiers to the $210,000 La Primera Del Ano Derby (G3) on March 30 and the $211,000 El Primero Del Ano Derby (G3) on March 31 at Los Alamitos.
Added to the fastest qualifiers are an additional horse in each of the races, making for a total of four O’Dell qualifiers.
The La Primera is for 3-year-old fillies, while the El Primero is for sophomore males. Each of the races is at 400 yards.
O’Dell is not one to tout his horses before a race. He prefers to let the horses speak with their performances. The past performances speak well about each horse.
In the La Primera are a pair of Parsons Family home-breds – Terrific First Down, the top qualifier, and Favorite Wise Lady.
Terrific First Down raced to the fastest qualifying time in the second of two trials when she stopped the timer in :19.703 for the 400 yards. The mare gained a wide path at the start and was soon on the lead. She pulled away to secure the confident 1-length win.
Sired by FDD Dynasty and out of stakes winner Terrific Energy, Terrific First Down hurt her withers last fall when she flipped over while her bridle was being removed.
“She’s coming around physically,” O’Dell said. “She a bigger filly and tall. She likes a little distance.”
Terrific First Down was third in the $30,000 Los Alamitos Two Million Juvenile and then third in the $198,700 Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) in her start before the La Primera trial.
Favorite Wise Lady finished fourth in her trial as the 13-10 favorite. She was a close second to Powerful Favorite in the $375,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity (RG2) last summer.
The daughter of Favorite Cartel is coming back from a hoof abscess and returning to form, according to O’Dell.
The O’Dell runners in the El Primero are fastest-qualifier Powerful Favorite and Tac Me Up.
Rosenthal Ranches LLC’s Powerful Favorite showed his class when he raced along the rail in his trial. After a stumble at the start, he quickly found is stride and ran down second-fastest qualifier Apollitical Pence to win by a game nose as the odds-on favorite.
A gelding by Favorite Cartel and out of stakes winner Remember Me Rose, Powerful Favorite is on a roll. He won his Winter Derby trial and then took the 400-yard Winter Derby by a dominating 1 1/4 lengths.
“In the Winter Derby, he ran 350 yards and then kicked it into gear,” said O’Dell. “He’s a true 400-440 horse.”
Owned by Ruth Barbour, Colten G. O’Dell and Wendy O’Dell, Tac Me Up reached the El Primero finals with the final qualifying time after finishing fifth in his trial.
A Governor’s Cup Futurity and $320,800 Robert Adair Kindergarten (G2) finalist, Tac Me Up won the $15,000 Autumn Handicap and was then second by a neck in the $25,000 Stotz Equipment Stakes last fall.
The O’Dell barn is leading the Los Alamitos meet in money earned and is tied for second in wins. His La Primera and El Primero entrants could help the stable stay hot.
