Excessive Gambler on Sunday set the fastest qualifying time to the July 20, $1,008,129 Rainbow Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.

Racing in the sixth of 10 440-yard trials, Excessive Gambler defeated 10th-fastest qualifier Tres Jazz by one length in :21.343. Esgar Ramirez rode the One Dashing Eagle gelding for owners Daniel Nunez and Ernesto Fierro and trainer Jose Luis Muela.

Excessive Gambler was bred in California by John R. Haagsma and John D. Haagsma. Raced exclusively in New Mexico, the gelding has won four of eight starts and has earned $40,965.

Muela qualified three finalists, including fourth-fastest qualifier Mystic Blues and fifth-fastest qualifier Eagles Coast.

“It is just one of those days when it all fell into place,” Muela said. "I expected this kind of effort (from Excessive Gambler)."

Other prominent Rainbow Derby finalists include Apocalyptical Jess, the third-fastest qualifier and last year's champion 2-year-old gelding. Ridden by Ricky Ramirez for owner Bill T. Robbins of San Jose, California, and trainer Trey Wood, Apocalyptical Jess won the fifth heat by one length in :21.354.

Apocalyptical Jess was coming off of a victory in the 400-yard, $958,766 Ruidoso Derby (G1) on June 8. The gelding, who was bred in Oklahoma by Danny Joe Miller, has won eight of 11 races and has banked $2,086,573.

“There are no words to express how proud I am of the horse and the entire crew,” Robbins said. “His consistency is amazing.”
