Valiant Astica, a sorrel daughter of Valiant Hero campaigned by J & SM Inc. and Jimmy Childs, broke her maiden in the second of 13 400-yard Rainbow Futurity (G1) trials at Ruidoso Downs on Sunday.

The fastest qualifier from the second of two days of trials, Valiant Astica defeated Mr Purgatory by a clear 2 1/4 lengths in :19.692 while aided by a reported 11-mph tail wind. Noe Garcia Jr. rode the New Mexico-bred filly for trainer Fred Danley.

Valiant Astica was bred by Mac and Janis Murray's MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico. The filly's dam, the Jesse James Jr filly Astica, was the sport's champion 3-year-old filly in 2015.

Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Valiant Astica has earned $9,480 from four starts. The filly was a $45,000 purchase at last year's Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.

"We bought her because her mama was a runner, and she's a beautiful filly," said co-owner Sue May. "She ran a very good race."

Rocket Seis was Saturday's second-fastest qualifier, as the daughter of champion Tres Seis broke her maiden with a one-length win in the first heat. Ricky Ramirez rode the Oklahoma-bred filly for owners Mark and Annette McCloy of Tatum, New Mexico, and trainer Trey Wood.

The five fastest qualifiers from Saturday's trials will face the five fastest qualifiers from Friday's 13 heats in the July 21, $1-million Rainbow Futurity final. Friday's trials were topped by Hotsempting.
