Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC's Apollitical Redflash, a sorrel son of world champion Apollitical Jess, made an auspicious 5-year-old season debut on Thursday, as the gelding broke Remington Park's 330-yard track record in an open-condition $34,000 allowance race.
Racing on a muddy and sealed track and aided by a reported 30-mph tail wind, Apollitical Redflash stopped the electronic timer in :16.295, breaking the previous record of :16.323 set by Pure D Spit in a starter allowance dash on April 10, 2014. Jorge Torres rode the gelding for trainer Clint Crawford.
Apollitical Redflash was bred in California by Rancho el Cabresto, and he was making his first start since August 20, when he ran fifth in the Grade 2, 440-yard Bank of America Prairie Meadows Championship Challenge. The gelding was winning for the fourth time in 17 starts and increasing his earnings to $208,312, and he was coming off of a 2022 campaign during which he ran second in the 350-yard Eastex Stakes (G2) and third in the 400-yard Leo Stakes (G1), both at Remington.
