Runnin For Corona and Dak top the list of 39 3-year-olds entered in Saturday’s 400-yard Retama Park Derby trials at Retama Park.

Runnin For Corona is a Utah-bred son of Corona Cartel trained by Josue Ponce for owner Dianna K. Estrada. A $67,000 purchase at the 2017 Heritage Place Yearling Sale, the colt will be making his first start since May 3, when he ran second in the 350-yard, $167,500 Sam Houston Derby (G3) at Sam Houston Race Park.

Runnin For Corona drew Post 8 and will be ridden by Victor M. Urieta Jr. in the first of four trials.

Dak races for Blue Star Racing from the barn of trainer Leon Bard. A gray son of Dominyun and a $14,500 buy at the 2017 Texas QHA Yearling Sale in San Antonio, the gelding has banked $232,265 from six outs, and his two wins include a half-length victory in last year’s 350-yard, $479,000 TQHA Sale Futurity (RG3) at Retama Park.

Dak drew Post 9 and will be ridden by Francisco Calderon in the first heat.

The 10 fastest qualifiers from Saturday’s trials will meet in the July 27, $40,000-added Retama Park Derby final.
