Live racing returned to New Mexico for the first time in more than two months on Friday, as La Feliz Montana Ranch LLC's Elmer set the fastest qualifying time from the first of two days of Ruidoso Futurity (G1) trials at Ruidoso Downs.

Trained by Jose Efren Meraz and ridden by Federico Martinez, Elmer made his career debut with a three-quarter length victory from second-fastest qualifier B Icy in the third of 14 trials. The homebred son of champion Fdd Dynasty covered 350 yards in :17.799 and earned an 86 speed index while racing against a reported 10-mph head wind.

Elmer was bred in New Mexico. The colt is out of Treasured Dreams, a winning 8-year-old daughter of world champion Apollitical Jess and a finalist in the 2014 Los Alamitos Two-Million Futurity (G1). His second dam, the Tres Seis mare Answer The Dream, won the '09 Junos Request Stakes (G3) at Remington Park.

B Icy went 350 yards in :17.896. Jose Enrique Ortiz rode the Oklahoma-bred Mighty B Valiant gelding for owner US Alliance Logistic and trainer Juventino Ruiz.

B Icy was bred by Homer A. Hill. An $11,000 purchase at last year's Heritage Place Yearling Sale, B Icy has won one of two outs and has banked $11,800.

The third-fastest qualifier from Friday, Wootan Racing's Misscandymountain, made her debut with a wire-to-wire, 1 1/2-length victory in the 10th heat. Ridden by Noe Garcia Jr. for trainer Mike Joiner, the homebred Jess Good Candy filly covered 350 yards in :17.900 against a reported 7-mph head wind.

Misscandymountain is out of Eyesa Lil Cuervo, a stakes-winning 15-year-old daughter of the Chicks Beduino stallion Lil Bit Cuervo.

Fourteen more Ruidoso Futurity trials will be run on Saturday, starting at 12 p.m. (MDT).
