Legacy Ranch LLC’s Mister Appolitical on Friday posted the fastest qualifying time to the December 13, $168,700 Southern California Derby (G2) at Los Alamitos.

Ridden by Jesus Rios Ayala for trainer Terry Knight, Mister Appolitical won the third of four 400-yard trials by 1 1/2 lengths from Chocolatito in :19.677. The homebred son of world champion Appolitical Jess was winning for the seventh time in 12 starts and fourth time in five outs this season.

Mister Appolitical has won his last three races, including the October 4, 400-yard PCQHRA Breeders' Derby (G3). The gelding has earned $219,726.

“He’s been real consistent,” Knight said. “He’s had a real good year. When I’m not down here, the (team) keeps telling me how good he’s doing and how he just keeps improving. You have to give them the credit for their work.

"He just shows up all the time," the trainer added. "His asset is his gate speed. When he is able to get away like that, he’s a tough horse to run down. We just hope we can keep him where he is at (form-wise). Two weeks a quick turn-around. Some of them do it, some of them don’t. Hopefully he bounces back. He ran a big race tonight, but hopefully he didn’t do a little too much.”
