AQHA’s Ranching Heritage program seeks to recognize and promote the quality ranch-type horse which epitomizes the breed’s versatility and remains at the core of the world’s largest equine breed association.

AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders embody the longevity, integrity and honesty of the ranching tradition. They must meet a number of criteria, including being long-term breeders, producing a certain number of horses per year, and using those horses for the specific purpose of operating a working cattle range. Find a Ranching Heritage Breeder.

Any horse produced from these ranches can be purchased, and in addition to their proven skill and ability in a variety of work and competition situations, they have an exclusive opportunity to compete for cash and prizes through the AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge program.

The AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenges are open to any horse bred by an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder. Anyone who owns an eligible horse can compete in one of the multiple age and skill level divisions offered for both horse and rider. Classes include working ranch horse, ranch riding, team roping and barrel racing, and are adding breakaway roping and steer stopping. These events typically offer more than $60,000 in added money every year, distributed across the regional Challenges. Competing at these Challenges can qualify exhibitors and horses to the AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge Finals, which offers $38,000 in added money at one event. The event is held in conjunction with the AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships in June.
