Fastest qualifier New News scores in Saturday feature at Sunland Park.

New News, the fastest qualifier and 9-10 favorite, earned his first stakes victory in Saturday's $210,852 West Texas Derby (G3) at Sunland Park.

Ridden by J.R. Ramirez and aided by a reported 8-mph tail wind, New News covered 400 yards in :19.059, and his winning margin was a neck from 4-1 second choice CDS Wine N Dine. Ricardo Armendariz saddled the Majestic Cartel gelding for owners Elco Armendariz and Omar Ruiz Jr.

New News recorded a 103 speed index while extending his winning streak to three. The sorrel gelding was bred in Texas by Bennie and Terri Jeter, and he is out of Executive Promises, a winning 9-year-old daughter of the Chicks Beduino stallion Executive Menace.

New News sold for $10,000 at the 2017 Texas QHA Yearling Sale in San Antonio. Campaigned in Texas, New Mexico, and Louisiana, New News has won three of eight starts, and the $99,101 winner's share of the West Texas Derby purse pushed his bankroll to $118,181, of which $115,601 has been pocketed this season.

Midday News finished third and was followed by Cd Better Be First, Guardianne, Ganster Americano, Walking On Katella, George W 43, Canonball Run, and Rustys Miracle.
