Forty-nine 3-year-olds, headed by All American Futurity (G1) finalist Doing Something Good, are entered in Saturday's 400-yard West Texas Derby (G3) trials at Sunland Park.
A $110,000 purchase at the 2021 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, Doing Something Good is a son of Big Daddy Cartel trained by Fred Danley for owner J & SM Inc. of Fort Stockton, Texas.The bay gelding has earned $261,201 from eight races, and he ended his juvenile season with a fourth-place finish, three-quarters of a length behind winner Hes Judgeandjury, in the September 5, $3-million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs.
Doing Something Good drew post 2 and will be ridden by Noe Garcia Jr. in the third of five trials.
Delight Interest, a gelded son of Seperate Interest trained by Josue Ponce for owner Triple Five, drew post 8 and will be ridden by Manuel Gutierrez in the first heat. A $30,000 buy at the 2021 Heritage Place Yearlilng Sale in Oklahoma City, Delight Interest ended his 2-year-old campaign with a second-place finish, a half of a length behind winner RGs Gold Wagon, in the December 16, $306,000 Evangeline Downs Futurity (G3) in Louisiana.
The 10 fastest qualifiers from Saturday's trials will meet in the February 25, $65,000-added West Texas Derby final.
