Race Record: Two qualifiers came out of the 17th heat on the first day of trials for the All American Futurity (G1). TF Im That Guy, a $32,000 Ruidoso Select Sale graduate, won the first days final trial by three-quarters of a length over Giving It All.
With All American-winning jockey Joe Badilla Jr. in the irons for two-time All American-winning trainer Juan Gonzalez, TF Im That Guy toured the quarter mile in the day’s third-fastest :21.563 while Giving It All was the fifth-fastest and final qualifier at :21.662.
Now an earner of $27,902 with two wins in five starts, TF Im That Guy has improved steadily. The colt finished fourth in his first race, a March 20 trial for the West Texas Futurity (G2), came back to run third in the April 12 final, next was second in his May 22 trial to the Ruidoso Futurity (G1) and finally broke his maiden in the July 4 trials to the Rainbow Futurity (G1).
Breeder: Bred by the partnership of Vessels Stallion Farm of Bonsall, California, and Steve and Stephen Tate’s Tate Farms of Villa Platte, Louisiana, TF Im That Guy was purchased at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale by Victor Diaz of Sunland Park, New Mexico, who raced First Down Dash’s champion daughter Royal Down Dash ($405,384).
The No. 2 all-time leading breeder, Vessels Stallion Farm LLC of Bonsall, California, also bred qualifier Hatefulist. The farm has $24.6 million in lifetime earnings with 1,309 wins in 8,020 starts. Vessels Stallion Farm won the All American Futurity in 1991 with Royal Quick Dash; 1992 with Dash Thru Traffic and 2006 with No Secrets Here.
Tate Farms has bred the earners of more than $430,000, including multiple Grade 2-winner TF Featured Effort.
Owner: Since 1991, Victor Diaz of Sunland Park, New Mexico, has owned earners of $1.46 million, including 1993 All American Derby winner Royal Down Dash.
Trainer: Juan M. Gonzalez has conditioned two All American Futurity winners. In 2003, By By JJ captured the All American Futurity championship. Then in 2013, Handsome Jack Flash won the All American Futurity en route to being named the AQHA racing champion 2-year-old and 2-year-old gelding. All said, Gonzalez has trained earners of $14.4 million, with 499 wins and 47 stakes wins out of 3,478 starts.
Jockey: Joe Badilla Jr. is a four-time AQHA champion jockey (1995, 1998-99, 2001) with more than $26 million in career earnings. In 10,659 starts he has rode 1,922 winners and 169 stakes winners.
He was in the irons in 1999 for A Delightful Dasher’s All American Futurity win, as well as for A Delightful Dasher’s win the following year in the All American Derby. He also jockeyed Snow Big Deal to his 2003 All American Derby win and DM Streakn Thru Fire to win the 2014 All American Gold Cup (G1).
Pedigree: TF Im That Guy also is by First Down Dash, the all-time leading sire of racing American Quarter Horses. He has sired the earners of more than $83.9 million.
The sorrel colt is out of the stakes-winning Special Leader mare TF Ms Special Perry ($115,284), who in 2009 scored in the Firecracker Futurity (G2) at Delta Downs. TF Ms Special Perry is one of six winners from eight starters out of the unraced Mr Jess Perry mare Dashadee, who also produced the stakes-winning Corona Cartel colt TF Cajun Cartel ($80,868), whose most recent of three stakes wins was on July 18 at Ruidoso in the $100,000 Corona Cartel Invitational Derby (R).
From the line of major winners developed by American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame breeder Robert Gentry, Dashadee is one of 18 named foals out of Deelish ($604,123) and is a half-sister stakes winners Deeheiress ($127,057,by Mr Jess Perry) and Da Edge ($117,076, by Separatist). Deelish is a champion daughter of First Down Dash and the Grade 1-winning Special Effort mare Such An Easy Effort ($496,127).
