Breeder: The No. 2 all-time leading breeder, Vessels Stallion Farm LLC of Bonsall, California, bred Hatefulist. The farm has $24.6 million in lifetime earnings with 1,309 wins in 8,020 starts. Vessels Stallion Farm won the All American Futurity in 1991 with Royal Quick Dash; 1992 with Dash Thru Traffic and 2006 with No Secrets Here.

The farm has bred many champions in its long history that include, most recently, Moonist, Hez Our Secret, Little Bit of Baja and Apollitical Time, who is also the dam of world champion and sire Apollitical Jess .

Owner: The partnership of James Markum and Steve Burns, DVM, of Menifee, California, owns Hatefulist. Burns also owns qualifier Crooked Path, who was the second-fastest qualifier from the first day of trials.

The partners purchased the colt for $24,000 at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Burns is a veterinarian and with wife Jo owns the breeding farm Burns Ranch at Menifee, California, where Separatist stands.

“They have the same owners and always work together, said Paul Jones’ assistant Lisa Saumell of Hatefulist and Crooked Path. “We call Hatefulist ‘The Gerbil.’ I love this little horse.”

Trainer: The all-time leading trainer by earnings, Paul Jones has been the Blane Schvaneveldt Champion Trainer from 2002-14. He has saddled horses that have made 21,191 starts, returning with 3,925 win and earning more than $78 million.

He trained Teller Cartel (2005), No Secrets Here (2006) and Runnning Brook Gal (2009) to wins in the All American Futurity; and Noconi and Inseperable to win the All American Derby.

This year he will saddle Crooked Path in addition to Hatefulist in the All American Futurity, and Fire Fortune in the All American Derby.

Jockey: Salvador Martinez of New Mexico has 3,947 lifetime starts and 512 wins with 39 stakes wins. His stakes wins include the West Texas Derby, Ruidoso Derby, Texas Classic Futurity and New Mexico Classic Derby.

Bred by Vessels Stallion Farm, Hatefulist is one of 659 winners and the earners of more than $21.3 million from 1,018 starters in 12 crops raced by his sire, a Grade 1-winning earner of $889,044 who won 16 of 24 career races while competing only in trials and stakes. The sire of three champions and 53 other stakes winners, Separatist is an 18-year-old son of Chicks Beduino out of the winning Hempen (TB) mare Seperate Ways, who has produced four stakes winners, 10 other winners and the earners of more than $2.2 million from 18 starters. Separatist is a half-brother to champion Way Maker ($617,444) and stakes winner Making Merri ($59,182), both by Merridoc, and to the Grade 1-winning First Down Dash stallion Make It Anywhere ($411,006).

Hatefulist is one of three winners from five starters out of the stakes-placed Fishers Dash mare Hardly Hateful ($436,979), the 2004 champion freshman filly who ran second in the Grade 1 Rainbow and Los Alamitos Million futurities and whose dam, the In Excess (TB) mare Hateful Hanna, was the champion distance horse in 1999.

“He’s just an amazing little horse and gutsy,” Jones said of Hatefulist.
