2-Year-Old Season Opens at Louisiana Downs

The first official 2-year-olds races of the new season will get underway on Tuesday,February 21, as 14 trials to the rich $256,603  Mardi Gras Futurity (RG3) will be contested at Louisiana Downs.

The ten fastest qualifiers will return to the Northwest Louisiana racetrack on March 10th and vie for the $115,471 winner's purse to the first futurity of the new season. The 300 yard race is restricted for 2-Year-Olds Accredited Louisiana-breds.

The highly anticipated first starters for freshman sires Jet Black Patriot and Coronas Leaving You will make their debuts in Tuesday's trials. A restricted Grade 1 winner of more than $876,921 at 2, Jet Black Patriot began his career at Louisiana Downs in the Mardi Gras trials. The son of Game Patriot set a new track record, which still stands, in the 2008 Mardi Gras finals. The black stallion will have 20 first time starters in the 14 trial races on Tuesday.

Two weeks ago, a daughter of the Jet Black Patriot, Jetblack Gold Moment, dominated a day of schooling races at Louisiana Downs when she won by 5 lengths. A Texas-bred, she is expected to start in the Harrah's Futurity trials on March 3rd.

Grade 2 Firecracker Futurity winner Coronas Leaving You will have seven starters in the Mardi Gras trials. The son of Corona Cartel won nine of 13 career starts at 2 and 3, earning $278,358. Downtown Corona, a gelded son of Coronas Leaving You, who posted a 2 ¼ length bullet schooling race victory on January 27th, will start in the ninth trial. Kiss Dash Maker who had a bullet work on February 9th will start in the 10th trial.

Other first crop sires with starters in the trials include the deceased Grade 1-placed Look Forward; Grade 1-placed Strong Hope; and Grade 1-placed Sir Runaway Dash, a full brother to world champion Wave Carver and champion Ocean Runaway.
