The 26th running of the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity will offer a guaranteed purse of $100,000, the largest since 1991. Canterbury Park will host the 350-yard race for 2-year-old American Quarter Horses on July 5, with qualifying trials held June 15 at the Shakopee, Minnesota, racetrack.

Last year, the stake's purse was $59,800 and was won by Brenda Reiswig's Midnight Sunlight. The last time the purse reached six-figures was in 1991, when the Grade 2 race offered a $112,750 purse and was won by Native Tango Mac.

In June of last year, Canterbury Park and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, which owns and operates Mystic Lake Casino Hotel, entered into a cooperative purse enhancement and marketing agreement that will inject $75 million into the horsemen purse fund over the agreement’s 10-year span. Now named the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity, the $100,000 race is guaranteed by the Mystic Lake Purse Enhancement Fund.

“The Northlands Futurity has a long history and has always attracted quality Quarter Horses,” Canterbury Park President Randy Sampson said. “The increase to a $100,000 purse will ensure that history continues. We will see the quality improve in all facets of Quarter Horse racing this year and into the future as new stables race in Shakopee and breeding across the state of Minnesota expands,” Sampson said.

Quarter Horse purses for the coming race season, which begins May 17, have doubled compared to the 2011 season because of the purse enhancement agreement.

Nominations to the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity close Friday, March 1.
