Jack Meyer

Jacques "Jack" Tacquard Meyer, Sr., aka "Popeye", 70, of Alvin, Texas, died January 23 at his residence.

Jack was born on July 9, 1941, to the late Johnny John Meyer and Kathryn Tacquard Meyer and was a lifetime resident of Alvin. He was named "Popeye" by his father when he was born because his arms were too big for his night shirts and they had to cut the sleeves to fit.

He played football and baseball and was a member of FFA. Jack had the Grand Champion Steer in Brazoria County in 1958 and graduated from Alvin High School in May 1959. He attended Sam Houston State College and then entered into the US Marine Corps Reserve in 1961 in the 3rd Amphibian Tractor Co., Galveston, Texas, as corporal in 1963 with an honorable discharge in February 1967.

Years ago, he coached the Missions baseball team and the Alvin Jets little league football team. He was a member of the Alvin Youth Livestock Arena Association. He owned Jack T. Meyer Construction for many years in home and commercial building. He also owned and operated Meyer's Jewelry and Loan with his wife in Houston and in Beaumont with his son Lorne and wife Michelle. He opened AMEX Pawn with his son, Butch in Houston, which is still in business, along with the Texas City location, now renamed AMEX. Jack was in the pawn business from 1983-2009 when he retired. The Beaumont store is still in business.

Jack was owner and breeder of race horses until 2011 and raced horses all over Texas and Louisiana with many racing friends from all over Texas, Lousiana and Florida. He is a life member of AQHA, Louisiana Horse Breeders Association and the Texas Quarter Horse Association.

He loved to hunt, golf, watch horse racing and was an ace domino player, loved all sports, especially college and professional football games. Jack especially enjoyed visits from his grandkids and was great preparing bar-b-que and loved cooking alongside his wife for family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, JJ (Johnny John) Meyer in 1972 and Kathryn Tacquard Meyer in 1989, brother, Lester J (Bubba) Meyer in 1987 and best friend, Adrian Gubert in 2011.

Jack is survived by his wife of 32 years, Shirley Miller Meyer, daughters, Virginia "Ginger" Diane Meyer, Kari Lynn Walker and husband, Robert, sons, Jack "Butch" Meyer and wife, Debbie, Lorne William Miller and wife, Michelle Havemann Miller, granddaughters, Kinsey Michelle Walker, Jordan Leslie Walker, Sydney Nicole Meyer, grandsons, Seth Lorne Miller, Cade Lorne Miller, brothers-in-law, William "Bill" Joseph, Robert "Bob" Joseph and wife, Ann, aunt, Florence Tacquard Anderson, special friends, Charlie Goodson and wife, Nancy, Hospice nurses, Lisa and Racquel or "his girls" as he called them. Special thanks for the love and care they gave Jack. He looked forward to seeing them every day and to numerous other relatives, family and friends.
