In a June 21 meeting, the New Mexico Racing Commission has voted to adopt Association of Racing Commissioners International model rules to toughen existing medication use policies. The rules will go into effect July 31.

The new regulations typically carry heavier penalties than previously used. They also lower the legal limits of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) a horse may be given before racing.

The commission is also setting aside $45,000 as a start for out-of-competition testing.
