Orions Award sprinted to a half-length win in the $93,940 TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity (RG2) on Saturday at Retama Park, notching his second win and his first in a stakes in a five-race career.

Owner Juan Perrett Jr. picked up Orions Award at the TQHA Yearling Sale for $5,500 from breeder Mark Nevill, D.V.M. The colt bears a record of 5-2-1-1 and earnings of $49,252.

Orions Award is the second stakes winner sired by Winners Award, an 11-year-old son of Runaway Winner bred and owned by Jerry Windham. Winners Award won or placed in eight of 18 starts and earned $80,148 in his career. He was a consistent stakes runner, with a win in the 2006 TQHA Sires’ Cup Stakes (R), a third-place finish in the 2005 Dash For Cash Derby (G1) and was a finalist in the Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity and Texas Classic and Ruidoso derbies. He was also a finalist in the TQHA Classic Stakes (RG3) and All American Juvenile Invitational (RG3).

Winners Award is out of the stakes-winning Special Leader mare Sweet Miranda, and her only other foal – a full brother named Winning Awards – was also a stakes-winning earner of $33,189. From four crops to race, with 22 of his 47 starters coming back winners, Winners Award is the No. 20 third-year sire of 2012. The sire of Katies Award, winner of the 2011 Princess Stakes Derby (R) at Ajax Downs, Winners Award stands at Darlene and Rene Hunderup’s Norse Ridge Farm at King Township, Ontario.

Orions Award's dam, Orions Dream, is a 24-year-old daughter of Ronas Ryon. The mare in her day was a tough competitor. She made 46 starts from 1991-1995, and she won 22 of them with eight more placings. She won the 1992 Southwest Derby (G3) and 1995 Annie Oakley Handicap, and placed in two additional stakes while earning $111,285.

She comes from a history of performance – her dam, Anitas Feature by Truckle Feature, was a stakes winner, and her second dam, Easy Carrie Ann by Easy Jet, made 40 career starts. Several of her sisters, too, are producers. Zee Feature (by Zevi (TB)) produced stakes winner Zee Six Pac (by Sunset Six, $21,309) and stakes-placed runner The Zee Man (by Dash Thru Traffic, $39,895), and Ineedanova (by Casady Casanova) produced stakes winner Hot Nova (by Hot Colours, $70,833).

From 12 starters, Orions Dream has produced nine winners, including stakes-placed Orions Kool (by First N Kool, $71,948) and PYC A Dream (by PYC Paint Your Wagon, $16,734).

Orions Dream has a yearling by Toast To Dash named Star Of Orion.

The TQHA Yearling Sale regularly produces bargain runners, and this year’s sale is coming up in a few weeks, on July 26-27 in San Antonio, Texas.
