Ruidoso Sale Concludes with Mixed Numbers

Gross and average drop but median rises compared to last year’s record sale.

Ruidoso Yearling Sale

The last of three sessions of the Ruidoso Horse Sale Company's Select Quarter Horse Yearling Sale concluded Sunday night with declines in total sales and average from last year's record-setting auction, however the 2013 median price showed a healthy increase over last year.

Overall, 319 horses sold for a $13,232,200 gross, a 13% decrease from last year's record sale where 324 head sold for $15,190,800. The average price of $41,480 was down 12%, but the median of $30,000 was up 20% from $25,000 in 2012.

Twenty horses sold for more than $100,000, seven over $200,000 and high-seller Cartels Big Gun sold for $350,000.

Edward C. Allred secured the sale-topping Cartels Big Gun, a Corona Cartel colt out of Grade 1-winning and producing Five Bar Molly, by Dash Ta Fame, from the Burns Ranch, agent, consignment. The brown colt is a brother to 2013 Ed Burke Million (G1) winner Five Bar Cartel (3 wins in 3 starts, $455,650).

The second two-high sellers were purchased by Terry Stennett from the Juliana Hawn Holt consignment in the final session. Stennett paid $260,000 for Rhythm Of Rain, a Mr Jess Perry colt out of the multiple Grade 1 finalist Love Samaba, by Corona Cartel. He also paid $240,000 for Heartsbold, a Corona Cartel colt out of the four-time champion All American Futurity (G1) winner Heartswideopen, by Feature Mr Jess.

Reliance Ranches LLC, who earlier in the afternoon won the $2.8 million All American Derby (G1) with Feature Hero, was the sale's leading buyer with 12 purchases for $1,107,000. The aforementioned Terry Stennett signed the ticket on six yearlings for $745,000. 5 Guys Partnership paid $590,000 for six yearlings.

6666 Ranch led consignors and agents with 27 head grossing $1,579,000. Julianna Hawn Holt sold 12 head for $1,028,000, and Burns Ranch, agent, had 12 for $749,500. Lazy E Ranch LLC, agent, sold 15 head for $742,000 and Lazy E Ranch, agent, for Crystal Springs Farm Dispersal had another 14 for $663,000.

Leading living sire of money earners Corona Cartel was the leading sale sire by average (two or more sold) with 33 yearlings at $83,364. Tempting Dash has five average $65,200, and leading sire Mr Jess Perry had 28 for an average of $63,071. World champion Apollitical Jess was the leading first crop sale sire with 15 head averaging $28,900.
