Ruidoso Schooling Races Drawn

Track set to run more than three dozen schooling races.

More than 200 2-year-olds, overwhelmingly non-starter juveniles, were entered in the 38 schooling races that will be contested on Monday through Wednesday at Ruidoso Downs.

There will be 13 races on Monday, 13 races on Tuesday and 12 races on Wednesday.

The training races begin at 8:30 a.m. each day. The races will be held over 300 yards with a maximum of six horses in each race.

Most of the 2-year-olds will be pointing to the Grade 1, $750,000 Ruidoso Futurity; Grade 1, $1-million Rainbow Futurity and the Grade 1, $2.6-million All American Futurity. The All American Futurity boasts the largest purse for any 2-year-old race in North America, regardless of breed.

The only Quarter Horse race with a larger purse is the $2.8 million-est. All American Derby at Ruidoso Downs. The All American Derby will have the largest purse in Quarter Horse racing history.

The All American Futurity is contested on closing day, Labor Day, and the All American Derby is held the day before the All American Futurity.

Many of the horses competing in the training races will start in the 350-yard Ruidoso Futurity trials on opening day, May 24. The 10-fastest qualifiers from the trials qualify for the Ruidoso Futurity on June 9.
