For the third consecutive year, fall racing returns to Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs. Like the two previous meets, the fall slate comes on the heels of a record-breaking spring in terms of wagering.

Will Rogers Downs will feature 28 days of Quarter Horse, Appaloosa and Paint races through Nov. 10. Live racing will start at noon every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“We’re ready to start racing again,” said Kelly Cathey, racing secretary for Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs. “We had a tremendous spring meet, and we’re looking forward to continuing the success this fall with a lot of great racing and some fun promotions.”

The meet begins on September 8 with the $100,000 guaranteed Black Gold Division II Futurity Finals, the $45,000 added Kansas Jackpot Futurity Finals and the Don Steele Memorial with $20,000 guaranteed.

As part of the opening day festivities there will be inflatables, pony rides and free face painting for children. There will also be racing programs available for 25 cents.

Overall, the racing schedule features 23 stakes races, including the $32,500 added Adequan Derby Challenge (G3), the $30,000 added  Red Cell Distance Challenge, the $100 guaranteed Black Gold Division III Futurity and the $50,000 guaranteed Cherokee Challenge.

On the final day of racing, the schedule includes the Black Gold Futurity Championship worth an estimated $418,993 and the Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Mystery Futurity Finals Grade II with $50,000 added.

During the spring meet, an astounding $20.5 million was wagered on live racing at Will Rogers Downs, which is an increase of $6 million year-over-year.

Will Rogers Downs, which is in its sixth year of operation, had seven days surpass $1 million in wagering during the 31-day meet. The previous record wagering for a single day was $958,163 on April 4, 2011. Before last year, the track had never earned more than $500,000 in a single day.
