Charal Kid Upsets Refrigerator Handicap

Veteran gelding scores second career Grade 1 win at Lone Star Park.

October 6, 2012

Nearly three years after pulling off an upset in the Dash For Cash Derby (G1) at Lone Star Park, Malinche Cattle Co.’s homebred Charal Kid did it again as he held on to win Saturday’s $75,000 Refrigerator Handicap (G1) at odds of 16-1. The 6-year-old Streakin La Jolla gelding, with Santos Carrizales up for trainer Eusevio Huitron, dashed 440 yards in :21.323 and won by a head after opening up a one-length lead early in the race.

This marked the 13th career stakes win for Texas-bred Charal Kid and improved his overall record to 44-17-11-3 with earnings of $456,360. This victory also earned him a berth in the $750,000 Champion of Champions (G1) at Los Alamitos Race Course.

Charal Kid, whose stakes wins range from 250 to 440 yards, has shown no signs of slowing down as a 6-year-old as he now has four stakes wins and three stakes-placings this year. Prior to his Refrigerator win, the gelding won stakes at Louisiana Downs, Delta Downs and Retama Park.

Sally Box’s Mr Truly Uno, a winner of two 550-yard stakes this year, closed well to take second. Ed Melzer’s Priceless Feature, the winner of this year’s Heritage Place Derby (G2) and runner-up in the Rainbow Derby (G1), took third. Champion and 3-2 favorite JLS Mr Bigtime finished a close fourth.
