Lorena Velazquez Rodriguez’s Check N Fetch scored her second stakes win in as many starts following an impressive wire-to-wire victory in the $25,000 Independence Day Handicap on Sunday at Los Alamitos.
Racing from post number five, Check N Fetch scored a half-length victory over Tom Atwood’s Consider while covering the 300 yards in :15.229. Her winning time matched the meet’s fastest time at this distance, which she also posted in an allowance race on February 10. Ridden by Eduardo Nicasio for trainer Paul Jones, Check N Fetch came into this race after posting a daylight victory in the Miss Princess Handicap (G3) on May 12.
“She is very sharp right now,” said assistant trainer Roque Gonzalez. “This was a tough field of horses, but she’s a good, honest mare. She gives you everything she’s got.”
“She was a little nervous in the gate (in the Independence Day),” Nicasio said. “She needs soft handling and she’s very consistent. She broke a little slow, but she took off right away.”
Bred by Mr. or Mrs. L. Judd Morse, Check N Fetch earned $13,750 in the Independence Day to take her career bankroll to $86,933. The 5-year-old gray mare is the daughter of Check Him Out and out of the Streakin La Jolla broodmare Shyann La Jolla. She’s now posted nine victories in 17 starts and her 2013 record now stands at three wins from six outings. In addition to her wins in the Independence Day and Miss Princess Handicap, Check N Fetch also finished second in the Native Empress Handicap on April 5.
Ridden by Cruz Mendez for trainer Jose Hernandez Jr., Consider earned $5,625 for her second-place finish. A winner in his previous outing when posting the meet’s top 330-yard clocking, Consider also finished second in Kaweah Bar Handicap (G3) earlier this year. Charger Bar Handicap (G2) and Garden Grove Handicap winner Tres Of Linda earned $3,125 for running third for owners Joleen Hales and Christian and Ru Anna Singletary. New Look, Twelve Stepper, Carne Vino and Corona Cade completed the field.
