Cougar Hill in Gillespie Fut

Cougar Hill meets RDD Dashin Effort in the Gillespie Co. Fair Futurity.

Luis Castellanos’ fastest-qualifier Cougar Hill and Old South Futurity winner RDD Dashin Effort meet over 350 yards in the $120,400 Gillespie County Fair Futurity on Sunday at the Texas track.

Cougar Hill (Panther Mountain-Lovers Dash by Sir Cashanova) has finished first in three of five starts, but was disqualified from the win in her first start. She then won her Delta Downs Lassie Futurity (RG2) trial and qualified for the finals, finishing seventh. The Judy Beavin-trained Cougar Hill stepped up in her Gillespie Futurity trial to win by three-quarters of a length and her time of :17.611 for the 350 yards led the qualifiers from seven trials.

Owned by Santiago Castillo and Julio Rodriguez, RDD Dashin Effort (Dashin Bye-Miss Native Effort by Streakin Effort) has already made seven starts and responded with four wins, highlighted by his head score in the $81,000 Old South Futurity. The gelding easily won his Gillespie Futurity trial by 1 3/4 lengths with the second-fastest time of :17.680.

Reyes Vasquez’s Spit Curl Jesse (Spit Curl Jess-Linda Laveaux by First Down Laveaux) has home track advantage with two wins over the track in his two latest starts, including the $37,300 TQHA Futurity (R). The gelding impressed in his trial when he was bumped at the start, but went on to win by a length with the third-fastest qualifying time of :17.695.
