DM Streakn Thru Fire Wins Zia Championship

Walk Thru Fire gelding earns his first Grade 1 win.

DM Streakn Thru Fire, a 27-1 longshot, captured the final berth to the Champion of Champions with a neck victory in the $150,480 Zia Park Championship (G1).

Racing for Richard Sturdevant, Terry Wootan and Joe David Yates, the 5-year-old gelding broke from the inside post in the 440 yard race. Under Salvador Martinez, the horse dueled with champion Feature Mr Bojangles, who broke from Post 4, and prevailed to win in :21.813.

Feature Mr Bojangles maintained for second, and was followed by Jess Fly With Me in third. First In Class DBS was fourth, followed by TF Featured Effort and Jess Cuervo. Favorite Prospect To The Top was bumped on both sides at the break and finished seventh. Wonderboy, Loves Brown Sugar and All About Torque completed the field.

DM Streakn Thru Fire was trained by Mike Joiner, and earns his first Grade 1 win in 23 career starts. The gelding has seven wins, including the 2012 Lovington Stakes (G2), and 10 placings with $528,908. He was second in last year’s Zia Park Championship. He has also finished third in the Texas Classic Futurity (G1), Rainbow Derby (G1) and was a finalist in the Grade 1 All American Futurity and Derby during his illustrious career.

His victory in the Zia Park Championship gives him the final berth into the $750,000 Champion of Champions (G1), to be run December 14 at Los Alamitos.

Earlier this year, he raced at 870 yards, including a second-place finish in champion All About Larry’s Red Cell Sunland Distance Challenge (G3). In his most recent start, he was sixth in the 400-yard Lovington Stakes (G2).
