De La Torre Pair Head Golden State

Zoomdasher, Do You Do Corona headline Golden State Derby.

August 23, 2012

The Henry Brown-bred, Jose and Gustavo De La Torre-owned and Eloy Navarro-trained pair of Zoomdasher and Do You Do Corona won the two trials with the top-two times to head the $236,000 Golden State Derby (G1) on Sunday night at Los Alamitos.

Zoomdasher (Azoom-Dashing Little Reba by First Down Dash) won the first trial by three-quarters of a length while scoring the mild 8-1 upset. She was timed in :19.732 for the 400 yards to gain the fastest mark. The winner of three of 10 starts, the filly would gain her first stakes win in the Golden State Derby after posting a third-place effort in the La Primera Del Ano Derby (G3).

Do You Do Corona (Corona Cartel-MLA Do You Love Me by On The Dash) rides a four-race winning streak into the Derby, which started with her maiden win back in June 2011. She has steadily moved up the class ladder and won her trial by a nose over New Look (Walk Thru Fire-Make Over by Separatist) with the second-fastest time of :19.819.

Martha Wells’ New Look has the credentials to gain his first Grade 1 win in the Golden State Derby. The Dan Francisco-trained gelding showed he belonged in the top-tier of the Los Alamitos sophomore division when he won the El Primero del Ano Derby (G2) over the highly regarded Kobe in April.

Ed Allred’s homebred Check My Thoughts (Check Him Out-Just Think by Pritzi Dash) could be dangerous after finishing second behind Zoomdasher in their trial. It was his first start since finishing a close third behind Kobe in the Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) back in February.
