Fairytale Beginning at Los Al
Just A Fairytale kicks off her career impressively.
April 23, 2012
Just A Fairytale enjoyed a storybook start to her racing career after posting the most visually impressive victory by a 2-year-old so far this season in Saturday’s second race at Los Alamitos Race Course. Owned and bred by Blaine Bateman, Just A Fairytale stumbled at the start but quickly got her act together en route to a dominant 1 ¼-length victory at 300 yards. The sorrel filly covered the distance in :15.517.
Sired by Corona Cartel, Just A Fairytale came into her racing debut after posting an easy :12 drill at 220 yards on April 7. Her time was the fastest of 51 works that morning. The Utah-bred is a daughter of the 1996 Los Alamitos Million Futurity (G1) winner Corona Cartel and out multiple stakes finalist Christie Jo Dash. Also owned by Bateman, Christie Jo Dash ran in the 2005 Ed Burke Million Futurity (G1) and second to eventual world champion Wave Carver in the 2006 Governor’s Cup Derby (RG1). Christie Jo Dash finished in the money in 10 of 13 career starts – all at Los Alamitos. She earned over $70,000 in her career.
Just A Fairytale will be a busy filly in 2012. She is eligible to compete in the trials to the Kindergarten Futurity (G2) on May 6 and is also eligible to race in the $1-million Los Alamitos Cash Bonanza, which serves as the track’s version of the Triple Crown. The Bonanza is made up of the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity, Golden State Million Futurity and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. AQHA Champion Trainer Paul Jones saddled Just A Fairytale, who was ridden to victory by jockey Ramon Sanchez. Owned by Dutch Masters III, Red Hot Baby Doll finished second in this race.
There was one other race for 2-year-olds on Saturday night, but this one was for runners eligible to be claimed for $6,250. S.A.M. Ranch LLC’s Barrel Babe won the 300-yard contest in a time of :16.01. Juan Sanchez piloted the Spanish Boot runner to victory for trainer Sergio Sanchez. Barrel Babe is eligible to run in the trials to the 2012 Los Alamitos Claiming Futurity to be contested on Sunday, May 27. There are 31 runners eligible to compete in this year’s Claiming Futurity as of the April 1 payment. For more info, call 714-820-2690.
