'Huckleberry' Wins Race for Hope at CBY

Filly picks up second career victory with daylight score.

August 4, 2012

Canterbury Park near Minneapolis presented its second annual Fillies Race for Hope on Saturday to raise money to support the fight against breast cancer. The day’s racing card features three stakes for Thoroughbreds and one for American Quarter Horse fillies and mares, the $27,750 Race for Hope Bonus Challenge for 3-year-olds and up. The race is part of the Bonus Challenge presented by Markel for Bank of America Challenge-enrolled horses.

The outcome of the 400-yard contest was never really in doubt, as 7-10 favorite Huckleberry Mojito opened up an early lead and cruised to a 1 ¾-length victory with Nik Goodwin in the saddle for conditioner Ed Ross Hardy. The Texas-bred daughter of Feature Mr Jess earned $13,875 for owner LMR 2011.

Bred by Gary and Patty Petersen out of the Grade 3-winning Mr Eye Opener mare Eye Opening Special, Huckleberry Mojito picked up her fourth win in 11 starts and second stakes victory after winning the Canterbury Park Derby earlier in the meet. She set a 400-yard track record in that race with a clocking of :19.625, and she ran the distance in :20.173 in the Bonus Challenge.

Walt and Pat Fletcher’s Believers Gathering, a three-time stakes winner and Grade 1-placed daughter of Agouti, finished second. Bailey Nagurski finished third for owners Albert Hogoboom and Fred Puttoff.
