November 3, 2013

After three runner-up finishes against stakes company this year, Crowson Racing’s Jess Cuervo found the winner’s circle for his first stakes win in Sunday’s $62,620 Lovington Stakes (G2) at Zia Park. Sent off as the 5-2 second favorite under jockey Manuel Gutierrez, the 4-year-old son of Corona Cartel held on to win by a neck in a time of :19.394 for 400 yards. You and Me Partners bred Jess Cuervo in Oklahoma, and Anna Crowson was the winning trainer.

Jess Cuervo has competed almost exclusively in trial and stakes company for his entire 19-race career with a total of four stakes placings. Three of those came this year with second-place finishes in the James Isaac Hobbs Stakes (G2) at Zia, Higheasterjet Handicap (G3) at Ruidoso Downs and West Texas Maturity (G2) at Sunland Park. As a 2-year-old, he finished third in the Rainbow Futurity (G1) and sixth in the All American Futurity (G1). His record now stands at 19-7-3-2 with earnings of $268,573.

Champion and Grade 1 winner Feature Mr Bojangles put in a game effort to take second with TF Featured Effort, the winner of this year’s West Texas Maturity and last year’s West Texas Derby (G3), in third. Favored Joker On Jack, who shipped in off a victory in the Refrigerator Handicap (G1) at Lone Star Park, broke slow and closed for fourth.
