After scoring a 6-1 upset in his trial victory, Verona Vaughn’s homebred King Of Pop pulled off another upset on Sunday in the $133,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity (RG3) at SunRay Park. Sent off at 13-1 after posting the seventh-fastest time in the trials, King Of Pop prevailed by a head in a dueling finish with runner-up First Place Moonfast. Macario Rodriguez rode King Of Pop for trainer Lonnie Vaughn and stopped the timer at :17.422 for 350 yards.

In King Of Pop’s only other career start, the sorrel gelding by Chickie Cherry Cola finished third at odds of 53-1 in a maiden race at SunRay. The New Mexico-bred, who is out of the Dean Miracle mare Queen Lavita, has earned $65,760 in his three-race career.

Alberto Montoya’s First Place Moonfast, a gelding by First Moonflash, finished a clear second and earned $23,940 for his effort. Daniel Amaya rode for conditioner Arturo Chavez. Denny and Carla Feerer’s Miss Tessmocker, a daughter of Hard Hitting who finished third in her racing debut in the trials, took third again in the final.
