Kuhl Wave Sets Track Record in Arapahoe Challenge

Wave Carver filly blazes to new 400-yard mark at Colorado track.

Kuhl Wave established a new Arapahoe Park track record for at 400 yards in dominating the $26,370 Merial Arapahoe Distaff Challenge for fillies and mares on Saturday at the Aurora, Colorado, racetrack.

With the win Kuhl Wave earned a berth to the 400-yard, $125,000 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship (G1) on Quarter Horse racing’s championship night at Los Alamitos Race Course in Southern California on November 9.

Kuhl Wave, a 3-year-old sorrel Wave Carver filly owned by Miguel Banuelos, trained by Jose Aguilera and ridden by Francisco Raul Ramirez Jr., flew out of the starting gates and pulled away for a 3 3/4-length win in a time of :19.149 as the 3-5 favorite.

Shesnosecretary, an 8-year-old mare who was making her first since November 2011, finished second. Hooray Cowgirl was third.

The previous 400-yard track record at Arapahoe Park of :19.329 was set by Purely Prada in the Mile High Derby (G3) on August 9, 2009.

Tom Bradbury and Marvin Willhite bred Kuhl Wave in Colorado from the Shazoom mare Shazooms Doll. The $12,658 winner's purse boosted her career total to $84,894.

Shesnosecretary races for owner Saul Reyes and is trained by Gene Salazar. Bred in California by Vessels Stallion Farm, the sorrel miss is by This Snow Is Royal from the Apollo (TB) mare Secretary For Life. Jaciel Soto was aboard to pick up $5,406 for the effort.

Jose Manuel Barron saddled Hooray Cowgirl for Hugo Barron Sierra. Burnett Ranches LLC bred the Separatist filly in Texas from the Dash For Cash mare Hooray Baby. Ridden by Porfirio Cano, she earned $2,637.

Completing the field were Breitling Time, Solid Anita Jo, Sixsito, Arriba Cole and SS Black Corvette.
